THE UPNA STARTS THE ELABORATION OF THE GUIDE “OPTIMIZATION OF THE PRUNING AND SEALING PROCESS TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE OF WOOD DISEASES IN GRAPEVINE

The work carried out under the project and its results will be transmitted to the target groups and enterprises in the POCTEFA region through a comprehensive guide providing information on the most appropriate pruning techniques to improve productivity and increase the longevity of the vineyard, thereby improving the profitability of the wine-growing enterprises.

The analysis of the effects of the various forms of pruning and their results will be se reflected in a guide called “Optimising the pruning and sealing process to reduce the incidence of grapevine wood diseases” which will enable the transfer of the most favourable techniques for the POCTEFA regions and the most appropriate forms of protection from pruning wounds to the various players in the wine sector. The aim is to increase the longevity and productivity of vineyards on both sides of the border.

The UPNA, as the partner responsible for the activity within the Vites Qualitas project, began the creation of material for the guide, and was responsible for the production of several videos detailing the different types of pruning to be done in the trial. For this purpose, on 27 February, she went to a vineyard located in Navarra where several examples of the treatments were made in situ and filmed. In addition, the spurs were scanned in 3 dimensions before and after the pruning. These multimedia files will be used to provide audiovisual support for the talks and end of project sessions.

Throughout the life of the project, the UPNA will be in charge of creating a working group with technicians from the INRAE and ICVV in which functions, tasks and deadlines will be assigned for the preparation of this document.  In addition, the UPNA will be responsible for collecting the particularities of the different POCTEFA regions, and will consult with wine companies on the needs related to pruning and sealing practices, in order to incorporate them and respond to them in the final document. This guide will be presented on the final day of the project and at the Action 5 workshops, to which all the companies in the sector in the different POCTEFA regions participating in the project will be invited.
